I recently posted a beautiful picture (above) on my Facebook page re-affirming that our loved ones are always around us. This post elicited some very interesting comments about how we can know their real presence rather than put it down to wishful thinking or some form of psychological projection. One woman candidly remarked that she felt the presence of loved ones around her but didn’t want to put it down to her imagination or just wanting it to be true. Another talked of her television switching on and things going missing.
I think it’s extremely important that, as mediums, we engage much more with such stories, concerns and questions, since listening to and sharing such stories not only validate people’s experiences, but equally provide collective evidence of the afterlife. As TJ Higgs notes, it is surprising that mediums have traditionally paid little attention to signs from our loved ones and friends in Spirit. As she rightly says, they are as powerful and often more profound than mediumistic messages. Indeed, I have my own profound and amazing experiences of my granddad communicating with me through signs, which I take particular joy in sharing with people. When I first started visiting my then-local Spiritualist Church in Bath, my granddad came through and, for me, one of the most memorable questions the medium put to me was if I had problems with my screw-in light bulb? I was amazed as I often had to screw it back in to stop it flickering and had no idea it was my granddad. The more I developed as a medium, the more my granddad had fun in communicating with me. For example, I thought I was going mad when one evening my granddad turned on the hot tap in my kitchen! As I switched it off, his familiar laugh explained all.
We used to live in Rye in a 200-year-old house that had additional occupants whom we didn’t expect when we moved in! One was a fisherman called Mark and the other Spirit resident was a lovely lady called Sarah. Sarah would often switch off our sideboard lamp to let us know that she was around. This always happened whenever we needed our mood lifting. TJ Higgs recounts one reading where Rebecca, who was keen to receive a message from her mother about her relationship, went white after TJ said that her mother had already given a sign, and proceeded to show TJ an image of pennies. Rebecca’s mother said that 4 pennies represented 4 months and that after 4 months Rebecca would know where her relationship needed to be. Basically, Rebecca told TJ that a week before her reading, she had been in bed with her boyfriend and when she had rolled over there had been 4 pennies on her back.
Carole Obley has written a fantastic book on spirit communication. In many of her readings, spirits impress her to tell loved ones that it is indeed they who are producing such occurrences as moving objects. As she nicely puts is, ‘a spirit may give validation that he is communicating with his wife by ringing the phone or doorbell. Some spirits will place or move objects in loved ones’ homes to grab their attention’. Spirits can and do manipulate lights, electrical equipment and telephones to get our attention. I recall reading for a lady from Gloucestershire whose grandfather often made the phone ring to catch his wife’s attention, which she was able to validate. As the woman above found, some spirits like to use the TV to reach loved ones. As with Carole, I have found that the most common way for spirits to reach us is through scent. My wife, for example, knows when her nanna is around her as she smells lavender. Finally, our loved ones can communicate with us via the repeated appearance of certain birds, animals and insects. Like many, I know my granddad is close when I see a robin.
